Terms of Use

The deal, in plain English.

These terms apply when you use KiwiSlice. They are written to be read rather than skimmed past. If something here is unclear, ask — that is a fair question, not a nuisance.

Who provides KiwiSlice

KiwiSlice is built and operated by SHMAKE, based in Christchurch, New Zealand. Where these terms say “we” or “us”, that is who they mean. You can reach us through the contact page.

What KiwiSlice is

KiwiSlice is a tool for organising a household's finances and for modelling decisions about them. It records what you tell it, does arithmetic on it, and shows you the result.

By default it runs entirely in your browser, on your device. That is a deliberate design choice and it shapes much of what follows.

It is not financial advice

This is the most important thing on this page. KiwiSlice does not give financial advice, and nothing it shows you is a recommendation.

Scenario results are projections calculated from the figures and assumptions you entered. They do not know your full circumstances, they do not account for everything that could change, and they will be wrong if what you entered is wrong or out of date.

For decisions that matter — a mortgage, a large debt, your retirement, insurance — talk to a licensed financial adviser. Use KiwiSlice to arrive at that conversation better prepared, not to replace it.

Your data is your responsibility

Because your information lives in your browser rather than on our servers, keeping it is largely in your hands. Browser storage can be cleared by you, by your browser, or by the device. Switching browsers or devices will not bring it with you.

Export a backup regularly, and keep it somewhere you trust. We cannot recover data we never held.

You are also responsible for what you put in. KiwiSlice cannot tell whether a figure is accurate; it can only work with what it is given.

Free and paid features

The core of KiwiSlice — budgeting, household records and Scenarios — is free to use, with no account required.

Optional paid features cover convenience: automatic cloud backup, document storage, and access across devices. If you subscribe, payment is handled by Stripe; we do not see or store your card details. A subscription continues until you cancel it, and cancelling leaves your access in place until the end of the period you have paid for.

If something is genuinely not working as described, tell us. Your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act are not affected by anything on this page.

Connecting your own cloud storage

If you choose to connect Google Drive, the files are stored in your account, not ours. That provider's own terms and privacy policy apply to them, and you can revoke our access at any time from your account with that provider.

We ask for the narrowest access that makes the feature work, and we use it only to store and retrieve your KiwiSlice backups and documents.

Using it reasonably

Please do not attempt to break, overload or probe the service, use it to do anything unlawful, or resell it as your own. That is the whole list.

Availability and changes

KiwiSlice is a small, actively developed product. Features will change, and some will be added or removed as it matures. We will avoid removing anything you depend on without saying so first.

We do not promise uninterrupted availability. Because the app runs locally, it will usually keep working even when our servers do not.

Where our responsibility ends

KiwiSlice is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for losses arising from decisions you make using it, from figures you entered, or from data lost on your own device.

Where you are a consumer in New Zealand, the Consumer Guarantees Act gives you rights that cannot be contracted out of, and nothing here tries to.

Who owns what

The application, its design and its code are ours. The household information you enter is yours — using KiwiSlice gives us no ownership of it and no licence to use it for anything else.

Ending it

You can stop using KiwiSlice whenever you like. Export your data first if you want to keep it, then clear the site's storage in your browser.

We may suspend access where it is being used to break these terms or the law.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change, the date at the top changes with them. Where a change materially affects you, we will make it visible in the app rather than hoping you re-read this page.

Which law applies

These terms are governed by New Zealand law, and New Zealand courts have jurisdiction over any dispute about them.
